Asal Usul Pendang
By Nur Dini Binti Jamaluddin
Pendang was historically one of the largest breeding grounds for elephants used to transport tributary goods to Thailand. The name 'Pendang' is thought to be derived from the word 'Pendiat,' which means a ditch or hole dug specifically to trap and tame elephants.
This is among the first well in the area, which according to the legend, was so deep that it was never affected by the drought. The newborn elephants are cared for in the community of Kampung Kubang Anak Gajah, and the elephants that have passed away are laid to rest in the community of Kampung Gajah Mati.
Apart from Mukim Naga in Kubang Pasu District, Pendang was the largest and most well-known elephant breeding site in Kedah at the time. Elephants served as the primary form of land transportation, notably for the purpose of transporting ufti (Bunga Emas) to Siam, now known as Thailand.
