Remaung
By Muhammad Adwa' Najmi Bin Jamaludin
Remaung is a spiritual creature that comes from the realm of elves and lives in Sungai Katibas. According to locals, Remaung has strange features where half of its body is a lion, and the other half is human. Every day, Remaung would come out of his dwelling to hunt down the Ibans who used boats through Sungai Katibas. He would sit on a rock across from his dwelling to wait for the victim, who would be his daily meal because human flesh was his favourite. It was greatly feared by the Iban community living in Sungai Katibas.
Various methods have been used to catch him, but because of the cleverness possessed by this creature, he was often able to sniff out the traps made for him. Unable to withstand Remaung’s cruelty, the Iban community's grievances were heard by Bungai Nuing, a warrior from heaven who had magical powers.
Bungai Nuing departed to Batu Gong where Remaung lives. They fought face to face for three days and three nights, but neither won. It turns out that Remaung is not an ordinary creature because he also has his own magic. Bungai Nuing let Remaung walk away, and Remaung thought that Bungai Nuing would never bother him again, but his guess was wrong. When Remaung got into Batu Gong, Bungai Nuing quickly came out of his hiding place. He took the rocks around Sungai Katibas, shaped them like a ball, and then packed them into a hole in Batu Gong. Unable to find an escape route, Remaung died in Batu Gong.
